“Seed Cathedral” the Stunning UK Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010

Not long ago, we had a post on Freshome about Shanghai Expo 2010 where we “exhibited” several pavilion designs that will be presented at the worldwide event. Today we would like to focus more on the UK Pavilion by Thomas Heatherwick. “The Seed Cathedral” features 60,000 fiber-optic rods which pierce through the six-level structure. Each rod contains seeds from the Millennium Seed Bank in Great Britain.

Here is more information from Thomas Heatherwick: “The Seed Cathedral sits in the center of the UK Pavilion’s site, 20 meters in height, formed from 60,000 slender transparent rods, each 7.5 meters long and each encasing one or more seeds at its tip. During the day, they act as optic fibers and draw daylight inwards to illuminate the interior. At night, light sources inside each rod allow the whole structure to glow. As the wind moves past, the building and its optic “hairs” gently move to create a dynamic effect ” Stunning! Sillhouete is one of their most recent home products, designed for luxurious interiors and users with a passion for the industry trends. Its sinuous lines and slender overall look make it a very intriguing furniture addition. Moreover, this seemingly small cupboard (50×45x156h cm) hides plenty of available storage space. Sillhouete features shelves, niches and drawers that are not noticeable at a first glance. On the exterior the drawers are embedded with ebony and mother of pearl in order to create the lavish effect.

Iron Design Company recently exhibited this interesting bottle rack idea at the Architectural Digest Show in New York. This design goes out to all of our readers for whom enjoying a fine glass of bottle is more than a habitual action, but instead became a ritual. The producers describe the item as follows: ” Holding up to a half case, the fluid shape of this bottle rack appears to be moulded by the bottles themselves”. The rack is made of steel, it looks very elegant and also extremely functional- it is able to hold up more than five bottles.
